Precipitation Forecast

The following links are to pictures that show the forecasted precipitation derived from the real-time Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) forecasts (http://ruc.noaa.gov/). In particular, the data that are downloaded come from the following site: ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/ruc/prod/.
Output is created every hour. It consists of and analysis output as well as forecasts for 01hr, 02hr, 03hr, 06hr, 09hr, and 12hr from the cycle time. Precipitation fields are not available in the analysis file. And, there are four records for which precipitation are outputted for each forecast time:

    1. NCPCP:surface:0-3 hour fcst: 3 hr accumulation Ground or water surface Large scale precipitation (non- conv) [kg/m**2]
    2. ACPCP:surface:0-3 hour fcst: 3 hr accumulation Ground or water surface Convective precipitation [kg/m**2]
    3. NCPCP:surface:1 hour fcst: 1 hr accumulation Ground or water surface Large scale precipitation (non- conv) [kg/m**2]
    4. ACPCP:surface:1 hour fcst: 1 hr accumulation Ground or water surface Convective precipitation [kg/m**2]

The following links will take you to the page for the indicated forecast hour; the RUC analyses are updated and downloaded hourly -- these links should have new information at about 15 min past the hour; every hour:

These are static at present and hence are not real-time forecasts but we are working to supply the real forecasts for precipitation and they will soon be updated.

Note that the 12hr forecast is only made at the following "cycle" times:
00, 03, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18, and 21.
